Canadian soapbox derby

Welcome to the Windsor – Essex Soapbox Derby Association (WESDA), where the thrill of gravity racing meets the values of sportsmanship, teamwork, and STEM education. In 2023, we proudly introduce ourselves as a newly founded non-profit youth sports organization dedicated to fostering a healthy lifestyle, family bonding, and a passion for science and technology through the exciting sport of soapbox derby racing.

Our Heritage:

The roots of soapbox derby racing in Windsor-Essex trace back to the mid-1940s, where the thrill of the race captivated the imaginations of both young and old. Over the years, this beloved tradition grew and evolved, finding its home in iconic locations such as Jackson Park, the St. Clair College amphitheater, the charming streets of Kingsville, the exhilarating Malden Park Hill, and the welcoming town of Tecumseh. These diverse locations became the canvas for the racing dreams of generations, fostering a community spirit that resonated with the essence of Windsor-Essex.

A Pause in the Action:

After a period of hiatus, the absence of the soapbox derby left a void in the hearts of Windsor-Essex residents. The memories of racing down hills and streets, the camaraderie among participants, and the cheers from the sidelines became nostalgic tales. However, with a deep commitment to preserving the heritage and excitement of soapbox derby racing, we are thrilled to announce the resurgence of this cherished tradition.

Recent Events:

Our soapbox derby revival began at Tecumseh’s Cornfest in August, marking a special return to gravity racing. The inaugural race at this charming town signaled a new era for the Windsor – Essex Soapbox Derby Association, reigniting passion.

In September, the soapbox derby fever continued at the Children’s Festival in Windsor, transforming it into a dynamic playground. The event celebrated youth, community, and the spirit of Windsor – Essex, showcasing the excitement of racing.

Throughout the year, we had booths and cars at events like Windsor Meet a Machine, engaging with the community and spreading the joy and word of soapbox derby racing.

Adding a festive touch, we ventured into our second year of hosting a spooky graveyard at a local trick-or-treat event in Tecumseh. This Halloween spectacle showcased the versatility of soapbox derby racing.

Join us on this exhilarating journey of soapbox derby racing, whether you’re an enthusiast, an onlooker, or a potential participant. Stay tuned for more thrilling races, engaging events, and community celebrations as we continue building on the rich legacy in Windsor – Essex.
